Lawrie Williamson
“Looking through the bottom of a pint pot, or over the rim of a wine glass, life is casually seen. People amuse, dogs delight, inanimate objects become alive and suddenly the world is on your doorstep. It leads one to love all animals and some people. The world is a miraculous accident. I intend to stick with it for some years. The Greek philosophers took the same path.” We really believe in the quality of Lawries' work. A lifetime of experience speaks for itself in these sensational pencil drawings, watercolours and oils. Lawrie Williamson was born in 1932 and educated in Derbyshire. At the tender age of sixteen he won a major exhibition prize to study at Nottingham College of Art. This led Lawrie to Nottingham University and ultimately L'Ecole des Beaux Arts, in Paris. Lawrie now lives and works in Ireland. Lawrie's subjects can vary widely from canvas to canvas and are drawn from a lifetime of experience and observation. However a single factor is common to all his paintings, the use of light. Whether it be a smokey pub interior, bonfire night, flying kites on the beach or stunning views of Venice, each painting is underpinned with light that comes alive off the canvas. Throughout his career, Lawries talents have been widely recognised. He is a past winner of the Cornellisen Prize; and twice winner of the Stanley Grimm Prize at the Annual Exhibition of the Royal Institute of Oil Painters. He can also list the Canson Prize at the Royal Birmingham Society of Arists to his many achievements. Lawrie works predominently in oils, but also enjoys sketching in pencil and watercolour, as well as the odd use of pastel. Lawrie commented: "Since the Art Council's assurance that 'painting is dead' I have taken great comfort from the observation of my good friend Brian Sewell that,'it isn't'. Thus I remain gainfully employed and eternally grateful for his wisdom and support".
