Paul Horton - The Icon Collection
The Hawthorn gallery were delighted to welcome back celebrated artist Paul Horton to the gallery on Saturday 18th June.
Paul gave an inspiring 45 minute presentation about his 35 year career as an artist, his ideas and inspirations, as well as a detailed background to each of the new 'Icon' collection pieces.
Paul then drew lots in our Free Prize Draw, our way of thanking those in attendance. Five prizes, including signed limited editions and merchandise were handed out by Paul to the delight of the lucky recipients.
The gallery would like to thank our collectors who shared in this educational narrative from one of the UK's most popoular living artists. We have had many emails following the event asking us to pass on personal thanks to Paul, rest assured Paul will get to read these.
As our availability if very limited, please contact the gallery direct if you are interested in any of the Icon collection pieces which are now displayed on the Paul Horton page of the website. |

Art with IMPACT - A Case Study
If anyone was in any doubt that a well chosen piece of art can dramatically add impact to any space, please see some examples opposite of a recent Angela Smyth originals installation at a clients home.
The bold statement of Angela Smyth's originals 'Faith, Hope and Gloria' against the plain cream wall announces the main lounge as an important space and works superbly well with the vaulted ceiling detail.
'Leaving Home' by Angela was the perfect choice for our clients entrance hallway. The scale of the piece is such that it demands attention, yet the palette is both restful and soothing.
We are pleased to offer any advice we can on choosing pictures for spaces, no doubt you can see that when it's done right, art really can make a difference to any home.

Lawrie Williamson Norfolk Exhibition
We just wanted to mention that Lawrie Williamson had an extremely successful annual Norfolk exhibition recently, with sales of his originals and limited editions grossing in excess of £50,000.
We truly believe at The Hawthorn Gallery that this artwork is very collectable and highly investable. The power of the original oils and watercolours is quite breathtaking. The generic term 'modern master' simply doesn't do Lawrie's work justice.
“Looking through the bottom of a pint pot, or over the rim of a wine glass, life is casually seen. People amuse, dogs delight, inanimate objects become alive and suddenly the world is on your doorstep. It leads one to love all animals and some people. The world is a miraculous accident. I intend to stick with it for some years. The Greek philosophers took the same path.” Lawrie Williamson, 2010. |

the ORIGINAL art of James Milroy
The Hawthorn Gallery are delighted to launch the original work of exciting talent James Milroy. James' new 'CrowdingAboutSeries' is already attracting gallery interest due to its undeniable quality, novel style and personable subject matter.
Commenting on his work, James said, "These new paintings have started to take on a life of their own now. People are constantly suggesting new subject matter for me to paint. So much so that I have another 50 or so on the list currently! What's interesting about them is that they represent ordinary people in ordinary situations, which means everyone can relate to them. Each painting starts as an isometric grid drawing onto which I then paint individual people as motifs in a repeat pattern which builds up to create a human crowd. In theory, as with any pattern, these crowds could extend forever in every direction".
We hope you enjoy James's work and if you have any questions, don't hesitate to call or email the gallery. |

A Big THANK YOU to Caroline Shotton
We had a great day with Caroline in the gallery on Saturday 17th October. We just wanted to say thank you to everyone, and in particular, Caroline, for making it an event to remember.
Nothing was too much trouble and Caroline finally left the gallery at 7.30pm. As the appearance was only scheduled for 12pm to 3pm, she was a mere 4 hours 30 minutes late!
This is a great testimony to Carolines personality, with the time she spent chatting and laughing with everyone much appreciated.
We hope to have Caroline back to the gallery in the future, she would be very welcome.

Mr & Mrs Wilson by Angela Smyth
"I’ve just completed a lovely commission for a couple who had bought the print 'Mrs Wilson’s Pigeons' a couple of years ago. This print was quite special to me as it was based on our next door neighbour at the time, Mrs Wilson. She was 96 when she died, and I loved going round to talk with her, and she was a wonderful, fiesty lady. She had lived in our village since she was 5 years old, and most of her family had lived here too (her brother lived in our house!).
When she died I got to thinking of her husband, & I thought of how he kept homing pigeons - and a story started from there. The story went that when Mr Wilson died, Mrs Wilson tried to get rid of the pigeons, but as everyone knows - you can never get rid of homing pigeons, as they just keep coming back! So she was reminded of him and his love every day. The house on the hill represents the hills where we live, and the washing on the line? Mrs Wilson always had crisp, white sheets on the line!
So when I was asked to paint Mr & Mrs Wilson as a young couple I jumped at the chance. I painted them as two separate images, and had in mind for them to be hung together. The paintings were sold through The Hawthorn Gallery, and apparently the couple who bought them were delighted."

All Roads Lead to you - the true story
Read below the real story direct from Peter Smith as to his inspirations and concepts behind the stunning 'All roads lead to you' original and limited edition.
"The couple on the hill in real life have been friends for a number of years and only recently become romantically linked, this painting tells their story. The hills in the foreground represent the ups and downs they have gone through but they went through them together as friends so only one path is shown, if you count the hearts there is one for each year they knew each other as friends but was not in a relationship with each other. Eventually they realised that they were for each other and reached the top of the hill, all the hearts have gone and only one remains showing the bond between them. But how do we know that it's true love?
Well there is a hint on the left of the picture with the inclusion of 'The Eternal Gift', this couple have already visited the hill in the distance and are now moving through life perfectly balanced with the love for each other, but that still fails to tell us that this couple are the perfect match and to find that out you have to wait until it gets dark and look at the picture again...
When the light reaches a certain light level the blue and green of the sky turns into black and dark blue slowly revealing a heart in the stars that finally shows that this couple was destined for each other all along!"
Peter Smith, 2008

Peter Smith 'May contain Nuts' Appearance
A BIG thank you to everyone who turned out on Friday evening to meet Peter in the gallery, we had a fantastic evening. Peter worked tirelessly dedicating sketches, prints, brochures, slips and certificates as well as regailing collectors with the stories behind his paintings. Nothing seemed too much trouble and we thank Peter for making it a special night for our collectors.
We had great success with several of the new limited editions, no doubt the most popular where 'Do you come here often?', 'All roads lead to you' and 'In your Arms'. We are at minimal stock now on many of the pieces, but are expecting some more stock shortly.
Also on the site for you to view now are 3 fantastic originals from Peter's appearance, including the 'All Roads Lead to you' original oil; and the original concept sketch to the same painting, entitled 'Long time Love'. Jeff Rowland - A Brief Encounter
The Hawthorn Gallery would like to invite you into the gallery to view first hand the brand new collection of work from talented cityscape artist Jeff Rowland.
Heavily influenced by the work of British film director David Lean, who notably directed ‘Brief Encounter’ in 1946, this collection is inspired by the universal theme of romance, portraying the bond that has no boundaries – the bond of love.
With narratives unfolding in the iconic cities of New York, London and Paris, a Brief Encounter portrays a bygone era where men were men, women were women and romance was everything. |

With a Hollywood film in the offing about John's life as an art fraudster, the press that John's first releases generated has meant unprecedented demand for the second series. With a 150 edition size, they won't be around for long.
Furthermore, this side of Christmas, Caroline Shotton's 'The Great Moosters' and Paul Horton's 'Heart & Soul' collections should entertain us through the long winter nights ahead. All images will appear on the site when they become available to us.

RARE Mackenzie Thorpe Editions just in!
We have recently taken delivery of some early Mackenzie Thorpe pieces that are rare in the marketplace being long sold out from the publisher. We are offering these pieces at sensible prices so be quick to take advantage, as there is only one copy of each available.
The rarest of the works is a 2001 hand pulled silkscreen called 'The Office'. With only 50 copies in the edition, this image doesn't come up for sale very often. We love this piece & the jpegs simply don't do the vibrancy of the image justice.
Other pieces of interest include the sought after 'Love is Everywhere'; the 'Cock-a-doodle-doo' & 'Walking the Horse' silkscreens released in 1997, along with the ever popular 'Vale over Yorkshire'. We have seen Vale advertised at more than twice the price of our roman numeral copy. |

Exclusive 65 Editions
We are delighted to be able to offer our customers some very exclusive pieces this month. With a TOTAL worldwide edition of size of 65 copies, these special limited editions are available at selected galleries only.
We will only be getting minimal copies of each of the pieces, so please enquire quickly if you see something you like.
Our favourites from the new collection include Peter Smith's 'Honey Bunny', a great companion piece for anyone with 'are we there yet?'. We are also delighted with the new pieces from Reuben Colley, and we are no doubt 'Brindley Light' will appeal to a wide variety of art collectors.
Other highlights include the work of Lawrence Coulson, Neil Dawson, Mark Spain, Bob Barker & the ever popular Caroline Shotton.
If the British summer can't provide us with a smile this year, maybe the 'Summer of 65' can. Enjoy.

Mayday, Mayday - Exciting NEW Releases Due Soon
The exciting news for May 2007 is that there are three new releases by Caroline Shotton. We are constantly impressed by the comments in the gallery and website enquiries for Carolines work, and these pieces do not disappoint. Our clear favourite is Crazy for Moo, how cute is that! A fantastic gift for a loved one at any time of year. Huge Brownie Points!
Alexander Millar also returns with a fantastic 195 edition entitled 'Rogue Traders'. With its Only Fools and Horses connections, this piece is sure to strike a cord with fans of both Alex and the cult comedy. If you look closely at the lettering on the side of the Robin Reliant, Peckham has been swapped for 'Springside', the village in Scotland where Alex grew up.
Be quick to secure your favourite piece, quantities are striclty limited. We hope you like the new work.

Paul Horton Charity Release - Onward & Upward
Gallery favourite Paul Horton returns this month with a very special charity piece in aid of the Mines Advisory Group (MAG), which helps clear landmines from some of the world's poorest nations.
Steve 'Cockney Rebel' Harley is an ambassador for the charity and he and Paul are dear friends. They have teamed up to bring you 'Onward and Upward' which symbolises that no matter how hard the struggle is, honour and commitment to the cause
will lead you to your destiny.
Commenting on his latest work, Paul said, "The rolling hills, the factory smoke evolving
into dark and threatening clouds give it an air of foreboding, but our hero must
soldier on. Bike at hand on the long, steep incline, his destiny mapped out in
industrial geometry and nature's own testing-grounds, the verdant slopes
innocent and benign, but at the same time challenging."
The 195 edition will be signed by BOTH Steve Harley and Paul Horton, making this a very special limited edition indeed.

Fantastic New Hortons due soon
A Gallery favourite, Paul Horton has returned with 4 stunning releases for late June 2006.
Our personal favourite is 'The Magic of the Cup', a low 195 edition, which features an individual remarque by Paul on every print. This topical piece is sure to be as much as a success as 'Winter Wishes' was last Christmas. Be quick - these are sure to be very popular.
Paul introduces a love interest called Molly for scruff the dog in the 'gift of love'. Chester the Tramp also returns, on the road again, as we continue to follow his travels to 'a better life'.
Lastly, Paul's iconic family home, the symbol of love, warmth and strength appears in 'on Rainbow Days', a beautiful piece that reminds us all of the days when the sun shone for longer, and the 6 week summer holiday seemed to last a lifetime. |
