Hayley Murphy
My work is influenced by narrative, escapism, childhood memories and scenery. Using textiles and sewing as the base I create intricate and beguiling art works using dissolvable fabric and thread that tell visual stories. I make work using a sewing machine and use the machine to draw with stitch. Currently my work is patiently created building layers upon layers of stitch over the top of the thread which creates connections allowing the work to eventually support itself and create a threaded image. Once finished the fabric is dissolved in water revealing only the stitch as the outline leaving only the memory of the process. For the past 4 years, I have pursued this direction discovering how versatile both dissolvable fabric and thread are combined together. I like to experiment with various sewing machines and use various machine feet to emphasize and evoke different moods and emotions within the work. Thread is an incredibly versatile material to work with in terms of the variety that can be achieved; although the techniques I use to create work with can be time consuming and require patience, this makes the outcome potentially exciting as I know that the work will be worthwhile, rewarding and completely unique. After living in the north west for all of my life time and having easy access to Lancashire/west Yorkshire; these area's remain a prominent feature within my work and remain my main focus for inspiration. In many ways, sewing creatively is something that has been reinforced from childhood as I was introduced to sewing as a hobby from an early age. After completing a foundation art and design course I then went on to pursue a BA Honours degree in fashion design before switching to a Fine Art degree. My previous experience surrounding textiles has very much influenced my art practice as I now combine the two mediums together to essentially draw with thread.
