Kathryn Callaghan
A graduate of the University of Ulster, Belfast Metropolitan College and Alaska Pacific University, Kathryn is an emerging artist working and living in Co. Down, N. Ireland. She is married with two children, and after a ten year career in marketing, Kathryn returned to study art as a mature student. She has been working as a full time artist since April 2013, during which time she has become one of the best selling artists in her home country. Her subject area is the natural environment within which she lives, specifically wildlife and habitats. Her strength is in her ability to portray much-loved aspects of country life in Ireland in a contemporary, fresh way. Forget twee - her work aims to capture the essence of Ireland in a beautiful yet simple way. Gestural marks and lines are intended to echo the vitality and inherent beauty of the country's natural environment. The fast execution of her work aims to reflect the ever changing weather, the dramatic energy of our climate and the glimpses of beauty found in everyday life. Kathryn’s overarching aim is to create art which expresses the soul of her subjects - whilst at the same time incorporating a strong visual representation. Her current and recent work is made on sheets of board which is laid upon the floor of her studio. From mid-air, she pours, drips and squeezes her own inky mixture from a bottle onto the surface. There are never any pencil marks or pre-set guides. This is what she believes gives the immediate and spontaneous qualities to her work.
